my friend send pictures via whatsapp on my huawei p20 pro and it went missing

All downloaded media from Whatsapp is saved to the internal memory of the phone that saved it (Whatsapp Images folder). Older pictures in messages that were not downloaded are NOT saved on their servers, so you won't be able to download after a while. If the message was deleted (and the image not downloaded), it goes away from your conversation as well.

There is no way to recover deleted or expired images on Whatsapp unless you kept a Media back up and restore that (from the Whatsapp Chat Backup menu) or you uploaded/saved the images from the folder before they were deleted, to a cloud service or local back up.
