how to root htc inspire 4g

i just bought a used att htc inspire 4 g i previously owned a samsung galaxy precedent which i rooted a couple different times and i had fun with which is why i want to be able to root my new phone but from what i can tell it seems a lot more difficult to do than the precedent it but i bought that one new so i lknew it wasnt rooted this one i bought off craigslist and dont know howto tell if it is rooted or not i dont think it is but not sure .second i plan on putting this on strasight talk but my sim has not arrived yet is there anything i have to d to it to get it ready to accept thew straight tak sim card and sawervice coming fromm att.do i have to have the sim already to be able to root it ive been playing with it using wifi internet and dling apps that i had on my other phone but i wasnt sure if i needed the sim before i do any rooting.third is it possible to root and to put ics 4.0 on it i have other ? but cant think iof them right now
