Thanks for this info. I have a OV ( 2.2.1 now IHO CM71.) and my husband's new OV (2.2.2 stock rom ) that I rooted with the same version of Gingerbreak ( 1.20 ) It didn't work the same way because of the firmware updates. Now I will be able to flash the correct root on his phone and install the correct recovery. The other one wouldn't work correctly or make a backup. I wanted to run IHO CM7.1 on his phone but didn't because I didn't trust the recovery to do it's job right. Thanks again.

try getting gingerbreak v1.2 from the developer's thread on xda
download it to the phone; if it won't download, you may need 'download all files' from market if it hasn't been removed again by google.
then install a file manager from market (OI file manager and ES file manager are popular free ones that will work)
make sure you have 'install non-market applications' set, and find the gingerbreak apk with the file manager, long-press it, and select install.
make sure 'usb debugging' is set as well.
then run it...
some people say that if the phone is hooked to a pc with the usb cable, they get better results from gingerbreak. I don't remember that being a problem or not the couple times I've used it.

WOW! that was the only way to root this optimus v version 2.2.2! Thanks!!!
I simply downloaded the gingerbreak.apk file and went to market to install ES File Explorer.
Then I browsed to the gingerbreak app on the SD card and installed it! ROOTED.

This was a Virgin Mobile phone just purchased last month for my daughter. Compared to the HTC Evo, HTC Hero, and samsung Moment, this was the toughest phone to figure out how too root. Then you tell me to just run an Application. LOL! Thanks again.
