So how do I shut off listenijg for OK Google to save battery life? Can I also shut off Google alerts (I don't know what the app is called but the one that warns me of traffic and asks for feedback when I go to restaurants etc)?

My Gmail already has to be manually synked half the time so whatever I do I don't want to make that worse!

PS don't want to do anything that screws up gmail

All of that is controlled by the settings in the Google app... The updates you are talking about is called the feed if you don't want it just go to settings in the Google app and turn it off

Open Google assistant by holding the home button. Then open the settings icon on the top right. Then from here, you can disable some features. There's a way to completely disable Google but then Google maps and other features won't work properly. I personally think Google keeping my history is creepy but it's convenient I guess. You can clear your history at www.google.com/history
