how to stop from alerting you of emails

I just switched to Android from Android and I absolutely hate that it lets me know every time I have an email which is so damn annoying. Is there anyway to disable it from alerting you every time you receive an email. I would like to have manual control over this feature. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
