How to stop pop ups

Hi guys, Im beyond frustrated with this. I have a nexus 6P and i've gone chrome settings and enabled block pop ups but thy still come through. I have downloaded ad blocker which is great but I do like to use the google news and interests feed which I believe defaults to chrome. This means when im reading the news or checking the weather I get pop ups like 'congratulations you won' etc. Is there anything I can do about this? Is it possible to change google news default browser to ad blocker? any advise would be greatly appreciated.

It is malware. Try Safe Mode, to test whether a third-party app is the cause. Tell us what happens
