Welcome to Android Central! When you connect via USB, swipe down the notification panel. Do you see the USB icon there?

You'll need to use Android File Transfer to copy the files to the Mac, but it's notoriously buggy. I would strongly recommend Google Photos Backup: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en. If you choose High Quality (instead of Original Quality), you get unlimited cloud storage.

You can also use OneDrive or DropBox. There is an app, iSyncr, that will sync your iTunes music and also sync photos.

If your using an SD card, you can take it out then put it in the SD adapter, plug into the computer and transfer that way as well.
