How to trouble-shoot a service which stopped?

What is the best trouble-shooting approach to services which have stopped?

I do realize that if it's an obvious app (like The Weather Channel), it is simply a bug in their app, and I'll need to wait for an update.

However, I'm getting a stop message for something I think is associated with the Android OS called "TestService"

How can I trouble-shoot this?

For this TestService example, I went into settings | applications and cleared data and rebooted the phone. Disable was greyed out.
