How to use sd card as internal memory but save what's already on the card

I have a tablet running Android 7. I'd like to use an SD card and format it as internal memory. I know how to do that but I'm wondering if I need to worry about the files that are on the SD card that is in the tablet already as external memory. Do I need to copy those files somewhere and restore them onto the new SD card after I format it as internal memory? If so how can I do that?

Everything on the card will be deleted if you change the formatting. You should move them somewhere. If you have apps installed you will have to redownload.
