How to use the buttons on wired earphones on the lg g4?

I have a pair of ibeats and the controls on the wire don't work on my g4. Before my g4 I had a nexus 6 and they worked fine for pausing, playing, google now and skipping songs. The volume controls didn't work for some reason but I'm fine with that. I know it's not the headphones because I still have the nexus 6 and they work fine. But when I plug it in the g4 they don't work. Are they just not compatible? Or is there some secret setting somewhere? Please help!
