AC Question

Received a refurbished Galaxy s7 a result of a claim through Asurion/Verizon. Came with Verizon sim, which I never activated as I had just changed to Consumer Cellular. Put in a Consumer Cellular sim and activated service. After making some Access Point Name changes as instructed by a Consumer Cellular tech, the phone worked perfectly on the new network .. except OS updates. When I use the settings feature on my phone to check for updates, I get the message, "Sorry, we are having trouble authenticating your device." Consumer Cellular responded to my inquiry about this with this response: "I am sorry for any confusion this may be causing however the updates are provided by Google and the device manufacturer. When they send it to your device you will be notified to update that device." I have OS 7 loaded on my phone. I know there have been updates to OS 7. So, if that is correct, I would have to believe that Google/Samsung could get to my phone, even though when I try to reach them via System Updates on my phone, I'm informed they can't authenticate my device. Is there another route to getting system updates?*Thanks for any assistance!

There's a difference between manually forcing an update and waiting for one, since updates are staged - a few hundred phones at a time - so the servers don't get overloaded. If the server load is high, you may get a message like "having trouble authenticating your phone" even though the actual problem is that the server is fully loaded and won't accept any more update requests for a while. (And the time and date you requested it are recorded in the phone, so if you try again in less than 24 hours, you'll also get a "Sorry" type message. (Many error messages aren't actually what the error is.)

As for the update, the phone may already be updated to the last S7 update issued. Check Settings/About device/Baseband to see what your current version is. People with the same model S7 who have had a recent update can tell you what their baseband is - if yours is the same, you're as updated as you can be for now. If not, you'll have to wait.
