HTC Desire & Nexus One for UK users...?

Hey guys, im wondering if you can help me with a few questions.. i dont think its specifically covered else where...

I'm really considering coming over to android as I've had enough of the iPhones battery life and the same home-screen.

First of all, does the HTC Desire, have the same speech to text feature as the Nexus one, and would they both work in the UK with also the speech to text search feature. I know this is available on the iPhones google app. after looking into it, from various posts and youtube videos (sorry no link), mention that its specifically for the Nexus one as it had dual mic for noise cancellation, and its more aimed to the US market due to the accent? Is this the case? do the UK HTC desire have the little mic button on the keyboard screen?
Some videos have it and some don't..

Also can the HTC desire UK model (most specifically Vodafone) handset be rooted? I ask this because the previous phone from then the HTC Magic, was branded by them, and there were problems rooting it.

Hopefully someone could shed a light to this.. im hoping that it can be rooted, and also the speech to text function is available.

How is the HTC Desire and also the Nexus One battery life? and how is it compared to the iPhone? my iphone loses charge while on standby! and if loses more than 35% in less the 6hours doing nothing.. :S

And one final one, i think this has been asked somewhere else, is there a possibility to do screen-shots like on the iphone?

just got my desire a week ago and some of the stuff it does amazes me some of it drives me crazy
battery life seems to be better than my storm 2 which struggled to do more than 7 hrs (but i am a very heavy user) i take my phone off charge @ 730 am switch the bluetooth on and drive to work i use the phone all day lots of internet twitter facebook emails texts but few calls and at 530 the battery is on orange i then charge it in the car on the way home (about 45 mins) and then at home i use it less but dont charge it till about 11 pm (i never turn the wifi off but i do turn bluetooth on and off)

my desire is not vodafone branded ............ well i mean its not locked to the vodafone network i have tried my orange sim card in (love orange Wednesdays) and its no problems
the text to speech app is in the settings but i have no idea where or how to use it

btw my desire came direct from a vodafone shop

I have a Desire and I have yet to find the Speech-to-text feature (as opposed to Text-to-Speech ianst28 ) It may be available to install afterwards but does not come pre-installed.

ive had the desire for a couple of weeks now. Cant really comment on the text to speech, its in the settings menu, and the option is there to enable it, but i dont really have a need for it. I can check it out for you if you want. As for the battery life, if you have everything running at full tilt (wifi,bluetooth etc) then i find the battery drains pretty quick. Saying that however, if you turn the wifi off when not using it, and dont use live wallpapers i get a good solid days use out of it.
All in all tho, its a fantastic phone, so good my flatmate is considering getting rid of his iphone and switching to the desire..

I'm currently a S2 owner on VF too... are you glad you made the switch to the Desire as I'm really thinking about it, i can upgrade my phone now if i want to but im debating what to do.

BTW- On the desire can you set your own ringtone/SMS/messenger(cnectd)/Email tones with MP3's?

yes you can set your own tones for the ringtome not sure about messenger but for sms if you were to use an mp3 you would have to edit it for time.

Hi all

I have an unlocked and unbranded Desire in the UK on giffgaff.com network.

Battery is about the same as the iPhone. Sounds as though your issue may be down to poor signal in your area if the battery is draining so fast on standby.
Not sure what you mean by speech to text, but I have the mod where you hold down search and say "navigate to the tafford centre" or whatever, and it'll open up Nav and get on with it.
Nexus Vs Desire? I think I'd go Nexus if I could. Quicker updates.
Having said all that, I'd be waiting for the next moto phone to be released in Blighty. I won't buy HTC again after this and the Hero.

I am a HEAVY podcast listener, and easily get a day. Battery gets better after the first week or so - hang in there!

Battery life is terrible due to hoe small the battery is there is a larger battery available for roughly 15 quid. 3G+/HSDPA doesn't exactly help the battery either as it's very hungry, if you're not getting constant data updates I would suggest turning that off until you need to go on the net or send data.

I too am coming from blackberry (a bold 9000) to a Desire on vodafone with my upcoming upgrade this september.

From what I read about battery life, a combination of things can apparently increase it greatly, including things like task killer, and micromanaging the 2G/3G settings when in low 3g signal areas. Also, apparently the battery needs to be conditioned, and although not everyone agrees, full charges and discharges in the first week are reported to push battery life far higher than normal. Theres battery apps that can help you do this by ignoring the icon and telling how charged the battery really is.

Faced with the same choice as you other vodafone guys, I am 99% certain I will be getting the Desire. There is very little to choose from between these two. If they were people, you'd dress the in identical little outfits, but style their hair different. However, I really like the Sense UI, and the trackball makes me feel that the Nexus is 0.3 cool points below the desire.
