HTC EVO 4G and Google Voicemail

Hello all,

I recently purchased a HTC EVO 4G and had a question. I will be porting my old number from my old carrier to my EVO in about 3 days, because the contract with my previous carrier doesn't expire until then. My question is should I wait to do any kind of setting up of Google Voice on my new EVO until then? I started to do some setting up, but it keeps having verification problems and then says "updating call settings" and goes no further. I force quit Google Voice, but every time I re-open it, it immediately goes to "updating call settings" and just sits there and doesn't do anything else. Any suggestions?

I already have a Google Voice account attached to my gmail account if that means anything at all. The same email that is attached to my EVO. Also I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the Google Voice app again but it just does the same thing.
