HTC Evo and the HTC MyTouch Slide

So my sister in law came home today with the new MyTouch Slide. So of course, I played around with it. I made a few observations... For one, I thought all HTC Android phones had the Sense UI? It does have the Helicopter view but that's it. It also only has 5 home screens. I was VERY surprised with how smooth and fast it was. One thing that kind of got me: the mytouch was actually smoother scrolling through the application menu than the Evo. It was also smoother scrolling though the home screens, but in my Evo's defense I have widgets on every screen whereas the mytouch had only two. I downloaded ATK just to see what was going on in the background and despite having 18 apps open it was still smooth as hell. This is when I got a little upset... I noticed that even with 18 apps open, it still had over 200MB of memory available. When everything was killed it was as high as 270MB!!! I immediately grabbed my Evo and made sure everything was off... 160MBs. I don't get it? I noticed that when I first turn the phone on it's usually around 200 but after a while it's never over 160mbs. Not sure why. Maybe because of the Sense stuff going on? I know it's not that big of a deal because my phone is still plenty smooth with the 1GHZ processor but still an observation that left me kind of annoyed. All in all I gotta say I was pretty impressed with the mytouch. Definitely not made for the same audience as the Evo's but still a very good Android phone. I'll see if I can grab the phone when she comes back home and answer some questions if anyone has any.

Nope, not all of HTC's Android phones have Sense. The Nexus One doesn't either.

Free memory doesn't mean much on a Linux system. Linux manages memory just fine: it loads things it thinks you might need, or use again, soon, and replaces that if it needs to load something else. That 160 MB free doesn't mean that's all you can load unless you kill something. Linux will reuse memory as it needs to.

For more detail on how Android manages memory, read this:

Also, the MyTSlide has lower resolution screen... which leads it to have better graphics overall. It beat many other android phones in 3d benchmarks.

And remember, the 30fps cap.
Apparently the Incredible is very smooth at scrolling... and the Evo lags. So I'm guessing the 30fps cap has something to do with that.

Though sometimes I'd like to trade a lower res screen for better/smooth graphics.
I wonder how the MyTouchSlide holds up playing Nova or Asphalt 5.

I know the N1 didn't have Sense because it Google really wanted it to be strictly a "Google" phone. But I thought that the "regular" phones that HTC chose to build had it. Obviously I was wrong lol.

@meyer That explains a lot then. There's been times that I've had 10+ apps open and with lets say 150mb. I kill them all and it'll show either less MBs avilable, the same, or just a hair more. It still surprised me that there would be more memory available. But again i guess I kno why now lol.

@Kedar I totally forgot about the FPS limit. Maybe that is it. And I also forgot about the whole lower resolution making things faster. (This Dilaudid is clouding my thoughts lol.) I really hope that HTC gets rid of that damn fps cap. I really don't wanna root my damn phone just because of a fps cap :\

Is Nova or Asphalt 5 free? Probably not right? Let me know if there are any decent free 3d games that I can download on both phones and I'll do a quick video with a side by side comparison. Maybe I'll throw in my old Hero for ****s and giggles.

Nova isn't free. You have to download that manually online and sideload it.

However, Asphalt is in the market.
Try Asphalt 5 Free.
However, the comments there state that even the Droid lags (and it shouldn't)... so maybe they ported it pretty crappily.
All I know is it lagged on my Evo.

Try Toon Warz Lite by Polarbit.
The Evo 4g/Incredible/N1 run it, but with lag issues.

Hmm... I'm gonna download Asphalt and give it a shot. If either of them lag then I'll try and find another game to test them out.

Lol at Nexus being considered an HTC phone. Nexus is a Google phone, pure vanilla android.

Nova not on market? Didn't that game come on the honeycomb update? I know it was on mine cause I couldn't delete the thing till we finally got root again.

The my touch series runs espresso sense. Slightly different than normal sense...I actually preferred it over normal.
