HTC EVO Roam Only Option?

Hey guys and gals... I am new to the android thing and have a quickie question.

Anyone know if there is an app or mod that will let me switch to roam only on this phone? I get good service all over town, but when at work, down the toilet the sprint signal goes!

I have my Pre pimped with mods to quickly switch from roam to regular signal.
I know sprint won't have that option in the setup menu. (at least if they are consistant)

Thanks for any replys or ideas. :)

I second this. As with all newer Sprint phones, they remove the option. Any way to enable this besides a custom rom?

If I can't set it to roam only, I won't be able to use it. This could be a huge deal breaker.

You don't quite make sense here.

You state that you REQUIRE a phone patch in order to use it. The Pre has this patch because the active homebrew community that has been around for 12 months has developed one. The Evo perhaps does not have one yet--the phone hasn't been released yet!

Is it a reasonable expectation to assume that the Evo would have tons of mods, roms, patches, phone specific apps, etc available BEFORE the phone is launched? The Pre did not have patches, apps, Preware, WOSQI, etc before it was launched. How can this be a dealbreaker?

Either you get a phone on launch day... because well, you are getting a phone on launch day with all its implications. Those implications also entail that the homebrew/mod community has not fully developed customized stuff yet. Or you don't get a phone on launch day and wait around.

Mods/Patches/ROM availability is not the compelling reason to get a phone on launch day.

I think I've seen a "roam settings" in the phone settings area of other android phones. My Treo has it and I use it, so I too, am hoping that the EVO has this functionality.

Perhaps posting this question in the "Sprint Hero" forum would give you the answer. The Hero is also on Sprint and it is now using 2.1. However, the EVO may only have the 3g and 4g radios, so if roaming is on 1g/2g (I forget the name for it) it may not roam on Verizon's data network. Good question.

I wasn't saying anything in regard to the homebrew/mod community. I was simply saying I hope there's a setting built into the phone that allows me to set it to roam only. Furthermore, I'd never buy a phone based on its homebrew/mod community. My phone is not a device I care to tinker with to that extent. I should clarify though. I'd gladly use a roam only app, so long as I didn't have to root my phone.

I should retract my statement about it being a dealbreaker. See, I don't live in a 3G or even 4G area, which by all accounts is a total non-issue to me. I want the EVO for reasons other than its 4G speeds. And setting it to roam only in my area provides the best uninterrupted service, simply because Sprint's native signal in my area is pretty weak. I don't see it being an issue for me, because I'm quite a ways away from their EVDO footprint. I've used smartphones on Sprint's network in this same area, and it's always worked quite well. I'd just prefer to set it to roam only until I'm in an area with adequate signal.

Just because the EVO isn't out, 2.1 has been out for awhile and that's what's going to determine whether a hack or rom or whatever has been made for a "Roam Only" option. It's not unreasonable to believe that the hack would exist before the EVO came out.

I also really NEED that option. Where I work as soon as I enter the building I lose my Sprint connection, but I can roam on Verizon. I'm getting the phone regardless, but it's a priority for me if/when it comes.

exactly my thoughts. its not really a evo fix, its an android fix

i also have the same problem at work. yesterday i removed my roam only option on my pre, died before i left work. by roaming, i can last much longer

Don't you get contacted by Sprint if more than 50% of your activity is done while roaming?

my friend also has a pre and he has the forced roam patch because without it his phone is not usable where he is. been using this fine for 2 years now.

this thread is not about the EVO, he is asking if other android phones on sprint have a way to do this. like the hero. surely someone using a hero out there must need the forced roam function, is it in the menu settings, or is it a hack, etc?

the hidden menu *#*#4636#*#* might possibly have this function, but i really dont know.

We'll see, but Sprint removed the option on almost all their phones since the Pre came out. I have no coverage in my house, so I find the option on my pre very helpful.

the htc hero on sprint has roam options

yes it does have a roam option but it is the auto roam option i think the op is looking for a force roam option. witch 2.1 don't have. my hero on 2.1.1 fresh only has two options sprint only and automatic. roam. auto roam only kicks in when there is no signal at all. so if you have any sprint signal at all the phone wont roam. hope that helps.

Even though my phone is on roaming all day at work it's not even close to 50% of the activity. At work I have it on roam to receive the occasional text, email and to check FB once in a while. When I'm at home and out it gets the majority of use.

Speaking of patches... How come Android doesn't have a vibrant homebrew community? There are more people with Android phones, how come I don't see hardly any homebrewers out there or any big names? I don't see any Jason Robitailles or Rwhitbys. Oh and why no patches? Rooting a whole new ROM isn't ideal for most people.

Thanks

I guess I will have to wait for the ROM to get that option.

Now, doe 4G wimax coverage let you make phone calls over it? What I mean is, can you make phone calls over that 4g network by itself?

I know they have different tower locations and just maybe that will fix my reception problems at work.

Calls do not go over the 4G network at all. Eventually it will be IP based and VOIP, but not currently. If you are in 4G, it is possible to surf and talk as confirmed by a couple reviews.
