HTC First - Data Hog

I bought both of my sons this model. Both leave wi-fi on all the time. Where one goes the other follows, so the phones are not subject to different signal sources. However one uses .8 Gb a month and the other uses 4.4 Gb a month.

Now that tells me that even though the phone says wi-fi is on that it really is not. Any ideas on how to fix that?

A couple of questions for you:

1. Do both phones have both wi-fi and mobile data (3G/4G) on all of the time? In general, if there is an adequate wi-fi signal, the mobile data will go dormant in favor of wi-fi, but I think you know that already.

2. Do both phones have the exact same settings for data refresh/syncing, especially for Facebook?

3. Do both sons use the phones exactly the same way? This would be unusual. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them was watching a bunch of videos on YouTube or Netflix or something, while the other one wasn't.

Neither boy uses Facebook, it is turned off. They in essence have nexus interfaces.

One watches Minecraft videos, the other music videos, both on YouTube.

Any idea if either of those types of videos are HD or not? If the music videos are HD and the Minecraft ones are not, that could explain the discrepancy.

Also, how about those other questions I posed?

I will have to observe some of the videos to see who's are HD, if any. The data sync schedule is identical on the phones. The data hog's bedroom is closer to the router and has better signal. And as I stated in the OP they leave wi-fi on all the time.

You could probably just look at both phones' data usage screen to see which app is most responsible. If it's YouTube, then it probably has to do with the resolution of the videos they're watching. Either that or one of them is watching lot more than the other.

Reading the thread, I have a couple questions. First, is the data rates you quoted data charges on your cell phone bill? To elaborate, did the cell data get used, and you are trying to curb it?
Second, Do the phones leave the house?
If yes, then the phones will revert to a cell signal, and draw data that way.

From how I read it, it sounds like the data is from the cellular plan, because the OP's wondering if the wifi actually isn't working on the one with the huge cell data usage (even though it says wifi on).

Yes that much data is used by that phone as measured by the blue and white death star each month. (At&t for those who don't get the joke. )

I have a 10 Gig a month plan and sometimes we go over that because of this phone. Customer NO service/ technically NO help are worthless. They say the phone is operating normally and the person using it is consuming that much data.

Do they get text messages a lot?

Nope. Not much texting going on.

They can try putting the phone in airplane mode, then turn on the WiFi radio. That should stop any cellular data going on.

Yes that might. But wouldn't it prevent incoming calls, defeating the purpose of owning a cell phone? We do not have a land line; we call each other on our not so smartphones.

It's more of a diagnostic move--try it for half a day or so, see if the wifi is in fact working correctly on both phones.

A replacement phone arrived from the warranty repair distribution center this morning.

When I turned off mobile data the wi-fi was running at 2 kbps or less on any server and on other networks. The antennae in the phone was trash.

So the phone had wi-fi but was abandoning it for 4G. While at the WRC I had them call accounts and we went round and round about their faulty equipment until they credited me the few overages I had since buying the phones and having complained before with no results.
