I'm having problems setting up the mail app. One day it was there working fine and the next it deleted all of my accounts. Now it's saying it can't connect to the server. Do I have to do a hard reset.

A hard reset is fine if you are having other problems with the phone but, there are other things to try first.

I'm guessing that you are referring to the mail application and not gmail. You didn't mention Exchange or Outlook so I'm guessing we're talking standard POP email (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc).

From the home screen, tap Menu / Settings / Applications. Across the top select All. The scan down till you find Mail. Tap on Mail, clear Data and Cache. After that, pull the battery and wait a minute before putting it back in and restarting.

If that doesn't work, then you might try deleting the existing accounts, restarting the phone and then re-enter the account information.
