[HTC One M7] Screen is extraordinarily dim.

So i've been having screen issues with my old HTC one all week (I still use it for music and certain apps and such). At first, since no solutions I tried were working, I figured that I had finally just lost it. But today, the "shine a light on it and you can see the icons" trick actually finally worked. My screen was on, it was just too dim to see without a light.
However...I still can't fix it. According to my phone, auto-brightness is off and brightness is turned up all the way. Solutions online claim that upping the brightness alone is solution enough but evidently it's not.
Can anyone help?

Sounds like the LCD back lighting died, I'll let others chime in but it probably needs a new display.
