HTC One M8 battery drains even when it's plug in

I'm a relatively new Android user, and a new Android Forum user as well.

I've had this phone for just about two years, and it's performed well in that time. I use it a lot, and I've noticed a slight deterioration in battery life, but that's to be expected.

The battery drains when it's plugged to charge and when it's in use. It only charges when the phone is in sleep mode or shut off entirely.

Any ideas as to why this might be happening?

Your USB port could be going out. That's a known issue with this phone, or you could just need a completely new battery, seeing as you've had the phone for nearly 2 years. Be sure to check your charger, it could have a short in it, or its not enough mah to charge the phone correctly. Also have you considered upgrading? I'd figure that would be the better option, instead of buying a new battery or replacing a USB port.

The port is an issue (I had two fail on me), but still doesn't hurt to check the cheaper things. Don't forget to try another USB cable while you're at it because those go bad too.
