Don't really know about the battery drain, I don't use it often and when I do I just turn it on to use and then back off. Yes, you can turn it off. Go to Settings>...more>NFC

It is a way to send and receive data. Yes you can turn it off.

Go into settings - more - and it's in there

I'd leave it off if your not using it...Im sure it affects some battery in some way
