HTC One M9 Losing Audio Unless Screen Locked

Hello, I was on a conference call a while back and I picked up my phone to mute my mic so I could drink some coffee. When I did, the audio went completely dead. I thought I got kicked from the call so I called back in. It happened again later that week but this time I picked my phone up sideways and inadvertently hit the lock screen button as I did. When the screen locked, the audio came back and worked just fine. This is a common occurrence now and I can't figure it out. I need to be able to stay on the call and use my phone at the same time but if I unlock the screen I lose audio. Any idea what's going on here?

I chatted with HTC support and they had me boot into safe mode and delete some cache files. I'm not sure if this fixed the problem or not but I seem to be getting slightly better battery life and performance now. I tried to test for the problem again after the final reboot and I couldn't make it happen but I'm not convinced yet.
