You need a USB OTG cable. Amazon has them cheap. Use USB OTG checker from the play store to see if your device supports it. Your hard drive might need an external power source. If it doesn't work, then you would need to root and flash a kernel or ROM that supports USB OTG.

The One Max is OTG. Haven't had a chance to check if it's loaded with the proper drivers, though.

I can use my flash drives fine, HDD (NTFS) is not seen (even
for read-only, which is all I needed anyway)?

Is the standard Linux NTFS read-only driver just missing?
Would a self-powered fat32 formatted HDD work? Is there
a kernal module to provide NTFS either RO or RW?

The OS (4.3) see's a USB-OTG connection, but says
the drive is unformated or unsupported.

thanks
