HTC One Max fingerprint scanner

I like this phone, but for anyone out there with one, how's the scanner work, looks inconvenient.

I agree. Top back of the device probably wasn't the best place they could have put it.

For either index finger I think its OK. Its the other usable fingers that are a little awkward I find.

Works fine for me I use it all the time ...for me the middle finger works best

I use my picking nose finger, no problems at all.
