So, I had this happen on my AT&T HTC One, 64GB, handset/phone 10 days ago.

I noticed that over a period of about two weeks, the usb port became very, well, fussy. It did not seem to like certain cable/charger combinations. Now, I don't use crummy overseas aftermarket chargers-- Since I have owned Palm/HP webOS phones in the past, with similar amperage rating chargers, I felt comfortable using those OEM cables and chargers along with the HTC chargers and cable/s for the phone and for the (free) Media Connector device my phone came with.

So, again, the phone began getting 'fussy'. What is odd is that it was NOT consistent. Some times it would not work with a cable that it would be fine with a few hours later. Then, the next morning, it would fail to connect. Jiggling the connector didn't work-- it never would 'suddenly' make contact-- indicating that it was not a loose connection/shorted wire issue.

Then, when plugging the phone into my car charger one night after coming out of a meeting, I noticed that the charger's LED indicator was FLASHING. IT had never done that before. I unplugged it from the power port in the car, and replugged it in. Again it flashed. Odd, I thought.

Then I smelled the smoke. I turned on the overhead light in the car, and saw the smoke rising from the USB port on the phone and immediately unplugged the phone!

The damage was done. blackness surrounded the port. The tip of the Palm USB charge cable was blackened. The DC charge plug? Works fine with the other phones in the house yet-- nothing wrong with it-- it kicks out a standard voltage/amperage per it's specs.

Something happened, I believe, in the hardware of my HTC One, or it's charge control software or circuitry... I will not accept that there was 'fuzz' or foreign objects in the port, etc.

HTC advised me to send in the phone and await their conclusion on if it will be "covered" -- If they determine it is not covered, I will be livid. I paid for handset insurance through AT&T, and will insist on at least having that coverage utilized... there was certainly no "abuse" in connecting and disconnecting a charge cable for 5 months of normal use!!

I will repost when I hear back from HTC. The phone was sent in on 11/3.

Welcome to the Android forums.
Not a fun experience at all. At least you didn't get hurt.
Hopefully everything will go well.
