Hello All,

I need your help. I am trying to figure out if the crackling sound that I hear while running Max Payne is a Hardware issue with the One S or a Software issue with the One S. It could be a software issue with Max Payne/One S compatibility for all I know.

If you have Max Payne on your One S, even the international One S, please load the game and listen to the sound. Does it crackle? Do you ever hear crackling issues when viewing movies, music or at any other point such as calls?

Please leave a comment below.

In the video:

Yes, one of the One S has a brown tint/tinge.....strange...very strange. The other is darker and one is very bright yet they all are on the same automatic settings. Is that a hardware or software issue as well and have you experienced that too?

I am asking so that we can make T-Mobile, HTC or Rockstar or whomever aware so that they can fix or atleast document the possible issue. Who knows, you may need to send your device in for an exchange and the last thing you want to hear is "It is a beats audio feature, it is to be expected, the One S has the best speaker. There is nothing we can do as sending you a FOURTH device will not fix anything"

Both replacement One S's software information below:

Kernel version
3.0.8-01155-gca24d1e
root@ABM030 #1 (My original One S is root@ABM007 #1. What is the difference?)

Software number
1.84.531.2 710RD

Build number 1.84.531.2_R2 CL63329 release-keys (My original One S DOES NOT have the R2 in the build...does yours have the R2? (bolded to show what I am talking about)

Thank you for reading/watching and for your comments.

does it make the same sound with headphones? regardless i believe this is an issue with the software compatibility from the app itself. not the actual phone problem.

The sound crackles and rattles the speaker on anything over half way on mobile calls for me. The external speaker also crackles depending on what I'm listening to. Headphones sound perfect.

I believe it has to do with the small speaker and audio just overdriving it.

I went to a T-Mobile store and tried their test unit and experienced the same thing. I'm surprised no one else is complaining other than a small thread here. The speaker sucks.

I haven't tried with headphones. I'll go find some and then update this post.

Thank you for your reply!

UPDATE: WOW!!!! I plugged in a pair of headphones and I still heard crackling!!!! I was able to find out something new though, running Max Payne, when the sound crackled the music actually SLOWED DOWN!!! It was just like it began to play in slow motion and when it didn't crackle, the music sped up to normal speed.

I have also heard crackling sounds when using Skype, you can test it by making the Echo Sound Test and listen to the sound as the lady talks. It also crackles with headphones. The voice DIDN'T slow down like on Max Payne though.

Testing on my GSII, even Skype is clear and crackle free.

It appears to be a serious software issue OR a sound processor/CPU issue. Something is going on and more needs to be known and said about it. We all paid too much money for our HTC One S and I wan't to atleast have to comfort of knowing that T-Mobile/HTC is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

I wouldn't even want to sell my phone to another person knowing it has sound issues, either hardware or software. They would feel like I cheated them or sold them a broken phone. T-Mobile insists that it isn't a problem and I feel like I got cheated.

Thank you all for your comments, I hope more people respond and test their devices so we can get some visibility to this and a fix or replacement.

Hello there.

I am using HTC EVO 3D. I got the ICS update a week ago. Before ICS, Max Payne was running without any issues whatsoever and I was playing non stop. After the update, it started to do that crackling sound and its driving me crazy. Its even doing it when you plug in the headphones. I mailed Rockstar about the issue 6 days ago but no one is answering me. Just mail the crap out of them, maybe they'll start working on a fix.

Here's the e mail for Rockstar:

MaxPayne_AndroidSupport@rockstargames.com

I mailed Rockstar, here is what they are saying:

"I was talking to some people here in the office and they said that we have had previous problems with sound on the Ice Cream Sandwhich with GTA III Mobile. It looks like as of now there isn't a direct fix. You may want to revert back to your previous OS to fix the issue.
I'm really sorry for the inconvenience"

So its all about the game, not the phone or anything. Hoping an update comes quickly (which I think wont come that quickly :D)
