HTC One - taking pictures at night or in the dark?

Reviews for this phone said that the picture quality was great, and it is during the day, or in bright places, but I find it pretty much useless (with flash or in HDR mode) at night or in dark places? When using the flash, the timing appears to be off or something? Does anyone else find this, or advise how to adjust settings to fix this please???

More details please. What do you mean by timings? What is wrong with your photos specifically? Purple/Too dark/Over exposed? Have you tried night mode? Or normal mode with no flash? ZOEs then best frame?
