HTC told us all the way back in March that we’d have Gingerbread (Android 2.3) on the Thunderbolt some time in Q2, but with that time frame about to come to a close, our readers are starting to get antsy. And that means that they are reaching out to HTC to try and find out any little tidbit they can, one of which we’ve included below. An HTC rep has confirmed that the next update for the Tbolt won’t just be to fix the reboot issues, but that it will also update the phone to Gingerbread.

Dear Adam XXXXX,

I understand how important it is for your Thunderbolt to function properly and I apologize that you have been experiencing rebooting of the device. HTC and Verizon are aware of this issue and an update will be released soon that will address the reboot issue, and bring the Gingerbread 2.3 upgrade on board, as well as several other enhancements. Although I don’t have an official release date to provide you, this update will be released soon. Please monitor our website for further information as the release date moves closer.

To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Sincerely,

Jessica

I know that isn’t a date, but Q2 ends in 5 days, so we’ll be on the look out for any happenings behind the scenes. To get an idea of what you can expect from 2.3 on the Tbolt, you’ll want to check out this post.

That doesn't really tell us anything new. We already knew they were working on it based on previous comments not to mention the GB leak that has been floating around.

I just get to thinking more hope for the 30th then again they have let us down many times before

Re: HTC Rep Confirms that Gingerbread is Up Next for the Thunderb

my first ever....

COOL STORY BRO!

that felt good :)

This has all been done to death. CSR's are notoriously unreliable as we have seen with the launch of the device as well as the update release that followed.
there is no Leaked test version out (usually leaked 1-2 weeks before the ota is pushed) and none of the other tell tale update release signs are present.
dont get all worked up for an update. It will come when It comes.

:D

Ok, for arguements sake let's say the update comes out (whatever date) and it has MyVerizon and Skype with it. Since I have installed both of those leaked versions should I delete them from my phone first before installing the update?

Yes. Upgrades work best when you are running un-altered software. Minor apps like that should not really cause problems but its better to be safe than sorry.

i can't say for certain, but i don't think it's that soon, because a leaked gb ruu (similar to mr2 ruu) has not been released yet, and no release date has been given by anyone, both the mr1 and mr2 had release dates, granted they were pushed back, or with mr2, possibly superceded.

although, i really hope i am wrong, and that it is released in q2.

The MR2 which we got has most likely been superseded yes.It apparently didn't pass Technical Acceptance. Note that MR2 is Verizon's term for whatever the the next update is, so whatever is pushed will be called MR2.

I saw someone on the street who was wearing a t-shirt that had a couple of words on it. One of those words started with V, so I asked him about the Gingerbread update for the Thunderbolt. He grabbed me, escorted me into an alley, and proceeded to give me a wedgie. As he walked away, while I was hanging from a tree branch, he told me that the update is coming out on the 30th.

Wow this is starting to turn into a CB update trend!!:p

Re: HTC Rep Confirms that Gingerbread is Up Next for the Thunderb

I'm beginning to come up with a classification system for phone owners.

1. CO (Completely Oblivious). The vast majority of users. These people bought the phone, don't peruse forums (or at least not much), and don't really think about updates, rooting, problems, etc. They just use the phone and put up with any problems.

2. RTFM (Rooted, Tooted and Firmware Modded). These are the guys that don't wait for a second before rooting their phones, installing custom roms and tooting about it all over the internet. They often don't have much sympathy for those who whine and complain about an update not being out as they already have somehow triumphed by getting the leaked update before it is available to the general public.

3. Updaticus Impatientus. These are the folks who just can't seem to live without the next update. In real life, these are the people who are fidgety, cranky and hard to please. They expect the latest update of Android to be out two days after their hardware is released and often troll the net looking for any hint that an update is coming. They are eager to believe any rumor about a date by which an update will be forthcoming and get very angry when those rumors are proved false. They will believe and post anything, no matter the arcane source (carrier reps, vendor reps, etc.). In extreme cases, you can hear them stating that they will dump this piece of **** if such and such update is not out by yyyyy. They will also proclaim that they will never go back to VZW, Sprint, etc because they don't care about the customers enough to keep their phones updated with the latest and greatest. A few radical cases will openly threaten class action lawsuits or other legal action.

4. PC (Peaceful Coexisters). These are the few who venture on to the boards with the attitude that the updates will come when they come. They tend to not get impatient or make demands. The bane of the Impatientus, while not always being completely happy with their device, they are willing to wait for fixes to come out. They don't see the manufacturers as the enemy and realize that these things take time, which really frustrates the impatienticus to no end.

Any other classifications out there? I thought of trying to tie each of these to political parties, but I really don't want that firestorm!

Who knows, maybe I can develop this and use it for a dissertation sometime!:p

Well, I'm too afraid to root. I am obviously somewhat aware or I wouldn't be around here. If I was a PC, I wouldn't have posted something I could get flamed over. On the other hand, I do get a little impatient, just not enough to rant and rave about it as I know that software development in a large enterprise is not a simple task..

Maybe I should come up with another category....

Hey, I'm a firm believer in the maxim, "There are two types of people in this world. Those who separate people into two types and those who don't".
