HTC Sense on the Epic?

OK, i'm about to take the plunge to move from my (don't laugh) Treo Pro to the Epic. I have never used Android, but i'm really excited to make the move. With that said, all of this "rooting" and other hacking is scary to me, so i'll probably run the phone as-is.

I just bought my wife the HTC Evo and she loves it. One of the things I really like about that phone is the home screen, which i believe is called HTC Sense. My favorite feature is the weather on the home page with the GPS based weather. When i look at the home screen of the Epic it looks like just logos to launch programs. So my short question from a long post is, is there a program like Sense for the Epic to run as the home page for the phone?

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Other than not being on 2.2 (or 2.3) this phone seems like the best thing out there for a hard core business user.

There is actually a team of developers over at XDA that are going to start working on porting HTC Sense to the Epic as soon as we get the source code for official Froyo. I'll post more info in the ROMs/Hacks section as it becomes available.

If you want the gps weather you can use fancy widget. I use that and love it. They have a skin for payed version that looks like htc clock.

There are MAJOR differences between the Samsung phone and EVO. I assume you NEED a keyboard and thus your interest in Epic? Sense has a lot of useful software widgets and web browser (easy to use cut and paste) additions that few phone makers can match- that said- I still dumped the EVO for the EPIC and love having a keyboard...

Beautiful widgets is another great clock/weather app- and a lot of variety in skins and looks along with other sense like toggles added for the few $$ cost.

If you like the other sense widgets like friendstream and calendar/mail... get a new launcher for your homescreen... launcher pro is one of the few that have sense like widgets- they look and act like sense widgets, and in some cases are even more useful than HTCs.

Wow, great feedback guys. Thanks a ton. The reason i want the Epic is definitely for the keyboard. I use this to send a lot of email and can't imagine doing that on a screen.

Is there a calendar widget similar to htc? I have launcher pro with the widgets but prefer using tw.

Does tw 3.0 have unlock to email? I like that feature for sms but wish it had it for email and talk.

The only calendar widget that is VERY similar to HTC's that I've seen is Launcher Pro. (looks and function wise) Personally, I find separate calendar apps far more useful and I care less about how the widgets look. I love Jorte. I can make google my default calendar and do all my calendar functions without EVER using the stock/tw calendar which is also kinda buggy- and Jorte is a calendar REPLACEMENT app. It also has boatloads of widget views as well as app calendar view types and also does TASKS and all syncs with google. I believe it's free. There are colored themes and transparency for the widgets- but you have to dig through the settings to find it. The widget does not scroll however.

The TW lock screen does not have unlock to email that I'm aware of - but there is a lock screen replacement called Widget Locker- it's a couple of bucks but a lot of people like how at default, it's more like the stock android lockscreen- yet allows you to add widgets and additional unlock switches. You can set this app to REPLACE the standard TW unlock screen yet still use TW.

I use widget locker and Simi Clock and add weather to it and I have a nice clean simple clock / weather for my lockscreen. I then have beautiful widget clock weather small on my homescreen with a nice simple theme that is transparent, white and hand sketched weather icons.

Even if I still had an HTC phone with Sense, I'd still use these apps/launchers instead- but your mileage may vary...
