Is there a way to change the start screen and music? its just too ugly and too annoying

I can't say yes to this for definate but I have seen lots of moto droid root users customizing there boot screens so it may be feasable at some point with rooted devices.

Yes mate, its possible, I've disabled the boot sound and using a different boot animation. You need a rooted phone and the ability to enter the recovery menu though.
