Hello All,

I just noticed that Verizon Wireless is offering a promotion on the Thunderbolt for $149.99 and a free extended battery. I can upgrade next month, and I am thinking of taking this deal up now.

This is a online promo only, so I cannot go into the store and have them see if they can give me the deal early, so I am going to try to call customer service and ask if they can hook it up. Any tips on doing so?

I know what they are doing. Clearing it out for the Prime and Vigor. I currently use a Droid Incredible and have my eyes on the Vigor, but this deal seems pretty good for a phone of this caliber.

That being said, I was wondering if you guys think its a good idea? I know I'm getting a phone that is quite old, however, I find the deal is pretty good, and for some reason I have trouble convincing myself to fork up $300 for a Vigor or a Prime (I'm assuming they will be 300). $150 is very reasonable to me for a phone that I've had my eye on for quite some time.

What do you guys think?

Well, you are going to get a majority of us saying "Go For it"

Look at the whole picture as what you are wanting to do. Look at the benefits of what the Prime or Vigor or Bionic gives you versus the Thunderbolt. Once most of us upgraded to the Gingerbread OTA and some of use ROOTED....we have fallen in love with the phone again.

What those phones offer is a OMEOLD screen which is crisper and vibrant. They have duel processors and more onboard RAM.

If you are satisfied with having an "older" phone (NOT OLD), then that price is way to good to pass up. But, if you are someone that wants the latest and greatest, then, you might want to hold off and get one of those other phones. But, like the Thunderbolt, those will be OLD by this time next year.

Well, hopefully that will help!

I'm sold on the deal, but Verizon will not let me upgrade early because they have a strict early upgrade rule on 4G phones and iPhones. Has anyone also experienced this issue?

I know there are certain things to do and say when you call Verizon, but I also work in the Customer Service/Quality Assurance industry, and I do not want to call and cause a ruckus or say that my phone is broken or what not.

The good news is the rep said that this is price it might be for good since the Vigor is around the corner.

Damn...really wanted a Thunderbolt for 150!

Just because it is being offered online at a special price DOES NOT MEAN THE THUNDERBOLT is being discontinued. This is a popular device and is still selling well. It is an awesome device. Voice and data on both 3g and 4 g is very cool. Bionic does it only on 4 g.
Do not cut this phone short on quality and capability.

sent from my Thunderbolt....and the thunder rolls !

Thank you for all the help! There's apparently no way Verizon can hook me up early with a 4G phone, which isn't that big of a issue seeing as a lot of phones are on the way. They did say they could upgrade me early to a 3G model, but I don't know about that.

I might try and score a Thunderbolt on Black Friday if the deals are good.

I expect more promotions on the Thunderbolt to come in the future especially with the Prime in the pipeline, who knows, a better promo may come out at that time. The benefit of the Prime though, is it is a pure android phone so it should get updates directly from Google, instead of having to go through HTC then Verizon like the Thunderbolt. Also, it is 7-8 months later, so presumably, it would be updated longer than the Thunderbolt. If you plan to keep it for just 20 months, then shouldn't be much of an issue though.

not worth it. TBolt is ok... But there is better.

I have to agree with this... I picked mine up day one from the VZW store for $199, and if I would have waited a couple weeks, I could have gotten an even better deal looking around the web... If you have a TRUE upgrade (no early upgrade, do they even allow those anymore?), then the interwebs is your oyster! You can go through any site/store and upgrade at significantly lower prices if you do a little shopping around... Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly happy with my TB, but if I'm going to spend anything over $100, I'm gonna get my money's worth. And with all that's coming out, IMO its not worth it for the dated (that's right, I said it) hardware... Hell, with quad core phones right around the corner, I'm not seeing anything, (except maybe the Prime, and only for the Google updates and dev community, Samsung is meh IMO) this gen that really is catching my eye...

And wasn't it $49 for existing customers to upgrade to a TB? Thought that was what I read a couple days ago on Tech Buzz...

I know there have been some unhappy customers with the Thunderbolt and I am aware it has had its problems. I believe those problems have been fixed. I'm not really looking for latest and greatest cutting edge technology, because I don't really use my phone to its full potential.

I'm a pretty basic user and when I shop for phones I look for what gets me the most for my money. To be honest, these $300 dollar price top tier phones make me scratch my head. Aren't we signing a two year contract to have these phones subsidized? And seeing how fast the Android phone world moves, you drop $300 on a Bionic, and a Nexus Prime or Vigor come out a month or two later.

So I've basically decided to wait till black Friday to see what kind of crazy deal I can score. I have my eye on the Thunderbolt and Incredible 2 if someone like Best Buy or Amazon offer them for a crazy deal (Think a penny...)

Anyway, thank you all for your input.

Wait, the Thunderbolt has been a penny on Amazon for a little while now.

Amazon.com: HTC ThunderBolt 4G Android Phone (Verizon Wireless): Cell Phones & Accessories

Or am I missing some other criteria you had?

What will a Quad phone do, it might be over Hype:-\

Well, just like a dual core was "over hyped" when they first came out, I guess for me I would be looking at longevity. When dual was new, most apps weren't optimized to use them... It'll be the same for quad, in the beginning... Having a fifth core to run the background stuff will be awesome, and having all that processing power behind it, needless to say, even better. (And don't forget the NFC chips, not very supported right now, but give it a few more months...)

And yes, ALL VZW phones are on sale for a penny on Amazon... (that includes the Inc2 and TB, Bionic is only $0.01 for new customers, $219 for individual upgrade)
