I had a good look at the P20 Pro reviews because I'm looking for a phone with good camera features, and concluded that it has world leading camera technology that is significantly compromised by its software.
There are lots of useful reviews and tests out there, but a common theme is that the demo shots showcasing the P20 Pro's qualities seem to focus on buildings/scenery and the impressive night mode.
I want to be able to take good quality portraits, and the P20 Pro seems to have some serious issues here. There is a good example on this page:
SHOOTOUT: iPhone X camera vs Huawei P20 Pro camera - Business Insider
Check out the portrait example half way down the page, of the author sitting on a bench. The P20 Pro portrait is very odd, when compared to the iPhone example - all the texture has been smoothed out of the face, and the skin has been lightened.
You can see the same thing in the portrait example here:

Looking at the full size image, the P20 Pro portrait clearly comes off worst when compared to the Pixel and iPhone, with the same "waxwork" airbrushing of the subject.
From reading around, you can dial down the AI beauty setting, but even at zero, it still kicks in, in portrait mode. I understand that you can avoid the AI completely by shooting in raw, but I don't want to have to post process all my photos before using them, and raw shooting presumably also means that you lose the depth information and bokeh effect of combining the multiple lenses.
I decided it wasn't the phone camera for my particular requirements. The P20 Pro clearly has a superb camera, but I wasn't convinced that it actually takes good portrait photographs, in its current incarnation.
