Huawei mate 9 in Canada and Verizon

Hi,

I have an unlocked huawei mate 9. I put in a Verizon SIM card and the Mate 9 is able to make phone calls but not able to get data. I asked Verizon and they said I should be able to get both.
I am in a unique situation as I live in Canada. I have the Verizon SIM card because I have it through work. So it would need to operate through a Canadian carrier like Telus, Bell or Rogers when I am in Canada. Does anybody have an explanation why I am able to make calls but not access data. Anyway to solve it when I am in Canada. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In some of forum posts I have read that huawei mate 9 shouldn't work on Verizon. But Verizon support seems to think it would.

Q: are you using two SIM cards? One got Canadian "bell network" and Verizon?

Would have to give up using SD card to make it easy. A reboot to switch to active sim slot.

I am just using the verizon SIM card by itself. Haven't attempted the dual option yet. Tried Bell, Telus, Rogers to see if it would work on any of the network. No dice. Calls yes but no data. Tried reboots few times as well.

Anyone have any updates on this? I had a long conversation w/vzw tier 2 tech support. We looked at this phone on GSM Arena. They advised it should work on the network.

Bump. Still looking for some opinions.

I've been looking into this too because I really want the Mate 9 but I'm not willing to give up Verizon.

From what I've been able to tell if you get the international model (MHA-L29, which you can get on Amazon or B&H) you have a chance. It's missing LTE band 13, which is 700 MHz and much better for getting into buildings and in rural areas, but it still has 2 and 4 at 1900 and 1700 MHz. It has CDMA support, but I can't tell if it's the right "flavor" of CDMA.

Ultimately, Verizon is going to have to "approve" it to be on the network, and in order to determine that, you need to plug in the IMEI or some other ID number into their tool here:

Does anybody have an MHA-L29 and want to PM me the IMEI, ESN, or MEID number?

For me, the killer might be no 700 MHz support on Verizon. It has the 700 MHz LTE bands for T-mo and AT&T. As much as I love the design, even if I could get it to work on Verizon, I'm not sure I want to neuter my connectivity just to have this phone.

Welp, I stopped by the local Best Buy to fondle the S8+ and the Mate 9. They happened to have the MHA-L29 model as the display, so I looked up the IMEI (it had two) and dropped them both into Verizon's compatibility checker. No dice, it said it's not compatible. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Maybe there is a way to get them to activate it anyway, despite what that tool says. I thought about buying the phone, testing it out and then returning it if it doesn't work. But after careful comparison I think I'm going to go with the S8+ instead, for better or worse.

For what it's worth, when I had my Mate 9 and was still on Verizon I tried to get the phone to work. Somewhere on this forum I posted my experience and got the reasoning behind why it won't work in the US. The type of CDMA wasn't compatible in the US. I had a sim that was activated and working in an iPhone so it was already provisioned. The phone would detect the sim but wouldn't connect what so ever to Verizon. It could tell it was a Verizon sim but that's it. It would show full bars then after a second it would x out and show "no service".

That's probably a Verizon thing. They are very controlling and don't like devices on their Network they didn't approve.
