Huawei P30 Pro: doesn't seem to auto switch to strongest wifi signal, or delays

My home broadband is Virgin and I have a decent speed, circa 100 mbps but frustratingly I note that when browsing on the phone I often have a delay before it connects, where I suspect the phone is trying to latch on to the best wifi signal.
If I then go to the settings screen and check the Wifi networks, without fail I see the 'whirly wheel' or rotating dots as the phone attempts to connect to the wifi.
I have 3 options, a 2G and a 5G signal and also a booster plugged into an upstairs plug socket.
Most of the time I have to manually intervene and choose the best signal.
Is this a known Huawei P30 Pro problem, a fault on my handset or am I missing something?
I can't see any settings I can use to force the phone to latch onto the best signal.
Any ideas?

Personally, I've found that wi-fi range extenders don't work that well, and can cause confusion for devices trying to connect. It's not a direct solution, but you might want to consider getting a mesh wi-fi system (like Google/Nest Wi-fi), which works like a charm.
