So, had Project FI running fine for several months and the phone updated itself to Nougat and promptly self-immolated. With a brief Google FI online chat, they determined "Yup, we know thiis happened to some models so we will have manufacturer send you another phone, send the broken one back at our expense...".
Fedex just stopped by and pleasantly surprised, not a refurbished but a brand new phone with all original packaging, accessories, multiple items in a box.
