I am rooted....now what?

Sorry for posting another "help me, I'm a noob" thread, but I am and need some help.

I have zero experience with anything Linux and command prompts. But I was able to follow each step in the "How to Root" thread. I successfully rooted and copied a nandroid back up to my pc.

Now here is where I am unsure how to proceed. I want a version of 2.1 that is speedy, has wifi tether (I have the free pdanet installed too), and has sprint nav.

I looked at the 2.1 option 4 thread, but I am not sure if this rom is right for me or not.

I don't know how to "wipe everything", partition a card, or load a custom ROM. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks...that is starting to make sense to me. I saw that image when I rooted, but I don't know how to get back to it.

One more thing, in the how to root thread one of the first things it says to do is back up your apps to an "apps" file that you create in the "Android_stuff" workspace. I created a file and tried to run the command prompts to back up, but I couldn't get it to pull any apps to the file. Do I need to do this before proceeding? I did everything else correctly (I think) and have a copy of nandroid backup

To get into recovery-power off phone. Then while holding the home key,hit the power button while still holding home down til you see that menu pop up.

To back up apps that you have from the market.I would use Astro file manager(It's in market, search astro) it backs up apps for you.very easy if you need i can tell you how to use it.I would backup apps with that then copy everything to your computer before you go further.

Thanks.

I did find this thread.

That answers some of my questions. Still not sure how to add the extra stuff like Sprint nav and such, but I am slowly figuring this custom rom stuff out.

I am trying to figure out what all I will need to do it right the first time and not spend all day flashing and reflashing.

Thanks for the help. I am about to step out for a bit, but I hope to have some version of 2.1 running this evening. Then I will flash the wife's Hero, which should be easy by then.

To add Sprint navi. or any zips ive put up,just boot into recovery and flash like you will the rom.

Ok. I have flashed the lite version of 2.1 and the Sprint Nav app. It all went smoothly but I am having a few problems. I can't seem to get internet sharing to work. I am getting a data call failure message when trying to tether. I re-downloaded pdanet, but it won't connect either. It seems to be not communicating via the usb cable.

Also, on the "superusers" app when I click on it nothing happens...just a black screen. I am not even sure what this app does anyway.

The facebook updates in the people app doesn't seem to be working, but I don't really care about that anyway.

What's the best way of reinstalling the apps that I backed up with Astro?

Thanks again. This 2.1 lite ROM sure is snappy.

Tether without a app won't work(MNS).I would make sure usb debugging is on.Superuser is used when a app needs permissions. You don't do anything with it.With astro just check the apps you want to install then click install.

I use Easytether,if you don't have usb deugging on it will not connect.I think PDAnet is the same way.

Thanks. I will check it out.

Next thing on my agenda is to install the live wallpapers. I think it will go smoothly.

Just make sure to make a nadroid before you try that way if you don't like or want to revert back it'll be a lot easier for you.

Well, looks like my Hero is dropping all audio randomly. Crap!

Also, tried running a nandroid backup before flashing the live wallpaper zip, and I keep getting a "error: run nandroid-mobile.she via adb!" message.

Any idea what's going on here?

Thanks.

JBC, I'm right with you. Everything went absoutely wonderful, my Hero is flying now, with Live WP and all, Many props to Beezy.

Only issue is the audio cutting out randomly...played a 3:36 min song and it stopped once at 26 seconds, then again at 3:12.

You may need an Eris patch.
For some odd as hell reason, some Hero's have a Hero specific sound card and others have the Eris sound card. The stock 1.5 OS has patched versions so there isn't an issue, but the leak doesn't, and only has the drivers for the Hero specific card. (or so I'm told this is the issue). If it happens in call where the other person can hear you, but you can't hear them, I would try one of the patches at XDA for it. Otherwise, I dunno what the problem is. I'm one of the fortunate with a Hero specific card and haven't had any audio issues whatsoever.

Any idea about the nandroid failure? I don't want to proceed without doing another backup.

Thanks.

thats weird, happens multiple times? And you have no nandroid backup in the file:
/sdcard/nandroid/HTXXXXX/DATE TIME

I have multiple folders in the HTXXXXX folder. The original one from my root process, and I assume folders for all of the failed attempts today.

hmmm,
I would try flashing it again. Redownload the file and place in the tools, then adb push it to the SD card then
flash_image recovery recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img

see if that does it.
