So, I'm new to android, and I'm having a horrible experience. Kind of wish I'd just stuck with a crappy flip phone from Verizon. So, I called up HTC because my stupid home screen got completely erased. The guy had no idea what to do. So much for tech support. I then discovered that I have been running 1.5.6 Great. Also, I'm on a Mac, so even if I wanted to download 2.1, I couldn't sync it. HTC has no idea what to do with Mac. So much for universal compatibility. Is it even worth it upgrading to 2.1? Should I root the phone? Can I with a Mac? If so, what kind of risks are involved. Is it possible to do a complete factory reset even after rooting? I need serious help with this phone. Thanks.

yes you can root with a mac. or linux or whatever. i would goto settings/manage programs now find HTC SENSE click on it and clear defaults. that should give your home back.

also if you root on 1.5 you can flash a 2.1 ROM thats how you would upgrade without having windoze. you can root just using a sdcard as well.

it didnt give you the icons back? i would bring it to the store and get a new one in the morning.

No. Not even a little bit. The default ones work hunky dory, but I want the custom one that I made. Guess not. flipfone: is there anyway you could send me an IM on AIM? My screen name is MeLoveSquee17 Thanks

Sooo, you want your regular scenes to come back the way they were or you still don't have any HTC widgets. You won't get them back exactly the way they were with clearing the data, thats gone now. Do you get the widgets at all? If they are back, then you're set. I wrote the write up for rooting on a Mac. Its actually a lot easier on a mac than pc cause there are no drivers to work with. HTC Sync will not work for mac, sorry, you'd just have to live with that. If its an absolute must, there is a company that makes software for Mac/Android Sync, called the Missing Sync. Google it and you'll find it, but its around $40. I don't find it necessary as just about everything syncs with the Google account. Music can sync easily with DoubleTwist for Mac.

I wasn't having a problem loading widgets. I was having a problem with the fact that my entire scene was deleted.

I figured out what happened, and it's completely unacceptable. I had finished customizing where I wanted my shortcuts (AGAIN) and I wanted to fix my background. I went to settings->personalize it automatically loaded the scenes menu. I clicked the back button to go back to other settings, and it loaded the home screen... with no widgets and no shortcuts. This is horrible. Is there any way for me to fix this?

ETA: I can add widgets and shortcuts to my heart's delight.

You don't need to use a new theme just to change the wallpaper, just hit menu-->wallpaper-->home wallpaper and change it.

I know that. Here's what happened: My lock screen had changed. I went to go fix it. I went to change the lock screen wallpaper, but it took me to the scene part instead. I pressed the back button. It went to my desktop. On my desktop all of my widgets and shortcuts were gone. But I could add them. This is the 3rd of 4th time it's happened. Before I could go back and click it and it would change back. This is the first time I've been unable to fix it.

yeah, no clue there.must have been an "unsaved theme" issue that I've never come across. I'm also surprised you're on 1.5 still. Are you using a Sprint Hero or GSM hero? Root the thing already (my write up is for Sprint) and explore bigger better ideas than 1.5. You could put sense-less froyo on there if you wanted with almost everything working.

I want to root, but honestly I'm a little scared. I've never hacked anything and I worry I'd totally ruin the phone.

nah, there's nothing to it. Just make sure you have the files ahead of time, and you put them in the right spot on your computer, and then you could just copy and paste my tutorial. I've rooted several other people's Hero's no issue. Read the tutorial entirely first, if you understand it, great. If you don't ask, I'd be glad to answer ?'s
all you need is:
SDK installed to the Home folder of the Mac
asroot2: exploit that makes rooting possible on the Sprint Hero- install to the tools folder of the sdk
Recovery: allows you to flash/wipe/backup/restore/partition/ pretty much everything you thought you would ever need!- install to tools folder of sdk

once you have that, put the phone into usb debugging mode (settings--applications--development) and then copy/paste from tutorial (paste on mac is command+v)

maybe an apple iphone is a better choice for you.no compatability issues with a mac, and there a dime a dozen...its a win win.

Once I root my phone is there any way to return it to factory warranty settings?

Yes, but you need to download the 2.1 RUU. I don't have the link to it right now, hopefully someone else can post it.

It can only be used with a PC. So unless you have access to one or run it on your Mac then the reverting back to stock will be a little difficult.

you can root your phone follow Rufflez writeup its well written. if and when you want to restore your phone you can just flash a plain 2.1 then accept the OTA update. that will unroot it and noone will know the difference. we can cross that bridge whenever you need.
