i-bolt dock - what makes it tick?

My wife has a car dock that isn't the i-bolt, and when she puts her GN2 into it and plugs it in, it doesn't automatically go into dock mode, start CarHome Ultra, and so on. She loves that when she's in my car and uses my i-bolt, it does all that, but doesn't like the i-bolt itself.

What, exactly, is it about the i-bolt that makes all of that happen? There are basically three parts to it - the power cable, the adapter arm, and the plastic holder itself, and I haven't been able to isolate which piece does the magic. If I can, I'm going to see about buying her just that part to add to her setup, if it's possible.

Usually a dock triggers car mode with a specific setup if magnets. Its usually the dock itself for most brands but with the iBolt I'm almost positive its the cable. I remember people talking about the cable being delayed so they couldn't get car mode.
