I Can't Update

I checked system update on my wife's Moto G and I get the following message: Oops! You need a data connection to check for updates. Go to settings> Wi-Fi to setup a connection.

Any ideas? No sim in the phone yet. I can check Gmail and everything else (Playstore, Weather, etc.) Able to download apps. Would like to update to Kit Kat. Currently have 4.3.

thats weird.. I updated my Moto X without a sim..

have you tried to insert a dummy sim for time being??

No I have not. Not sure what a dummy sim is.

I mean some old sim which was inactivated or even a SIM from your current phone.


I would use a sim from whatever phone you have on the Moto G..

My wife's old phone has a regular size sim, the Moto G uses a micro sim.

My son's Moto G updated to KitKat almost immediately after he connected to WiFi on Christmas morning. He didn't have a SIM in his phone before then.

BoobyTC, are you in the US? Global or US model phone?

I'm in the Dominican Republic. Global Model is what I ordered from Amazon.

That's why. Motorola is only pushing updates in the USA for now.

Sorry, this is kind of way after the fact, but do you have USB Debugging turned on? Try turning it off and then update.

Actually this happened to me too before updating to 4.4 (without a sim), I just restarted and checked again and it worked.
