I didn't know that if you swipe a notification to the left it gets rid of it on your notification page. Is this new in ICS? I like it.

Yes, it's a new feature in ICS. There are probably a lot more that I haven't discovered as well.

It is new with ICS -- though like you I only recently figured it out, despite two months of it on my phone

You can do the same to close apps in the switch apps screen (long press home for Sammy devices)
