I don't get notifications on home wifi

Lately I have realized that at home I don't get notifications from most of my apps. I have notifications turned on and I do get them pushed to me when I go to other places with high-speed internet. The internet at home isn't blazing fast but isn't slow at 13 Mbps. I don't get notifications for most games and some other apps, like hangouts, where I could end up missing out on a conversation because I never got the notification. I get notifications about new emails and updates from the Play Store but that's about it. Is there something I can try or do to fix this problem and get my notifications?

Device: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 running 4.2 Jelly Bean

Seems more like a server issue with Google or your home network not allowing you to connect. I would suggest a reboot of the router if you haven't already done so.

I tried resetting the router but so far still no notifications. Are there any settings on the router that might be blocking notifications?

The only problem would be the router dropping incoming packets because the correct ports aren't forwarded to the phone. I have no ports forwarded to my phone and get all my notifications, so that's evidently not an issue with Android notifications.
