I Found a Captivate, How To Return to Owner?

Hey guys. So I found captivate while I was jogging the other day. I was messing around with it earlier trying to figure out who's it was.
The SD Card is a 2GB PNY, and there's no data on it. Is there an internal storage on these things? The phone works fine, but there's a gesture lock screen and I don't know how to bypass it.
I've taken the Sim card out and put it into my iPhone 3gs, but the card has been deactivated I believe. And there's no contacts when I try to import from Sim. I want to return this phone to the owner, but I have no way of finding out who they are.

I was thinking about logging in via an ADB shell, but I don't think debugging is enabled. The phone has missed calls and new emails, so if I can guess the password I might be able to do it. Any ideas?

Call AT&T (since it's a Captivate) and see what they can do. You should be able to pull the battery and give them the serial # and they *may* be able to tell you who the phone belongs to. They may also tell you it's confidential...never know. It is probably local so perhaps post a notice on Craigslist?

i would try to contact ATT customer support. They should be able to look up the esn/imei (located under the battery) number and find the owner.

Already posted a listing on Craigslist. :]

I'll talk to the AT&T guys tomorrow after school. I figured as much, but it was worth asking.

Thank you for the help!

^^^That doesn't always work as the original owner may have sold it..

That doesn't matter one bit. The ED number is tied to any one with current service. If the phone hasn't been reported lost/stolen by now, it will be soon. All activated phones are easily identifiable by the service provider, new or used (though I doubt it is used) if I would have found that phone, the owner would have been notified that day. It isn't rocket science, really, it is easy and 90 percent of the responses are right, take it in:)

I hope it all works out for the owner, but lets give some SPECIAL THANKS to the finder!!!!
Most people would have sold this thing and moved on, this guy, no he treats it like it is his own and does what he would want someone to if it was his.

I want to personally thank you for making the effort!!!!!!!:)

Customer Care or any Corporate retail location can pull the previous owner info via their system from the imei on the device.

AT&T will probably just take the phone back. If the person had insurance it'll have to be sent back in if they got a replacement.

I would also like to personally thank the OP! I would also try to return it (I work in a restaurant and we find things a lot) but not many people would! So thank you, and spread the love!

AT&T, like any carrier, certainly CAN run the numbers and identify the owner if it was used on their system.

Of course, if they refuse to do that, then the owner has to BUY A NEW PHONE FROM THEM and they make more money while doing less work.

Do let us know, if they try to help the owner, or boost their phone sales.
