i have a m8 and m9 and it seems the speakers are louder/more bassy on the m8 and also the screen has richer blacks and better colors on the m8, what gives? anyone else notice this?

Have you had both in your hand at the same time? Not saying the m9 sucks or anything but the m8 defenetly sounds better. After more thought the screen on the m8 is richer but maybe a little less detail, more of a preference I guess on the screen.

The m9 has the m8 beat in the hardware Dept obviously but the m8 speakers are defenetly better.... Atleast on the devices I have. The speakers on the m8 are easily 15% louder.

My wife has the M8 and I have the M9. I listened to Google Music on both. Tunein on both. YouTube on both. The M8 is definitely louder. I wouldn't say the sound is better. Streaming from Plex with Dolby 5.1 sound tracks the M9 sounds better. So basically the better quality the audio source the more the M9 distinguishes itself from the M8.

Is the Harmon Kardon M8 louder and as good musically as the Dolby M9? I set mine on the the bathroom counter every morning and listen to music while getting ready, including showering. I love this phone.

Nope. The M8 I can hear on the shower. The M9 I can't.

What's disheartening? Not hearing the phone for the 15 minutes you're in the shower a day?

That 30min of getting ready each morning is really the only time I use the speakers. It's disheartening that in order to save $276 over the course of the next year, I have to leave behind my beloved M8 HK that does everything I need perfectly for something that looks better, but might actually be worse for my personal usage. Disheartening in the same way that my favorite radio DJ's are on during my 20min commute home, but if I leave at the wrong time, 15min of my drive is commercials and a song or two. I think it's pretty obvious music is a major factor for my phone choice if I sprung for the Harmon Kardon version even if I personally find it ugly compared to the normal M8's. The HK sound processing was just THAT much better to my ears.

Guess I'll find out how loud my shower is on July 2nd. I can easily hear my M8 when inside my shower without any distortion.

I wonder if the speakers are the same, but the new aluminum grill covering makes them seem quieter. I imagine the craptastic plastic bezel strips of the M8 would vibrate and allow more sound thru them.

Must have really loud showers also, I can hear mine.

I can literally leave the phone on the counter near the sink and hear the M8 in the shower that is 10 feet away clear as day, what they are saying on the radio. It's pretty impressive. Even if I put the M9 right on the ledge beside the shower. I can hear the talking but have no idea what they are saying. I admit, I wish the M9 was that loud. But like I said, in other situations the M9 sound quality is better, so it's a mixed bag.

Why don't you just keep the M8 HK then? I certainly would. I only got the M9 because my M7 was getting long in the tooth.

Viper4Android can do miracles.
My S6's speaker is now 3x louder thanks to V4A as well as BT and earphones volume.
Can't wait to switch to M9 to try it

Buy a bluetooth speaker, or keep your M8.

I have the big round HK bt speaker that Sprint was hawking for $99 with the M8 last year. My incentive to upgrade is I would be paying $5 a month for the M9 with free service as an employee compared to my pre employment $29 a month for my pre employment financing deal. The real question is if the M8 is $24 a month better than the M9.
