Hello folks

Well as you see by the title I am an X owner, fully knowledgeable on that but not on the Captivate(not Fascinate). She just upped from an HTC Aria finally and right now she just wants to get rooted and see what she wants from there. I have been reading the threads and stickies per normal, but DANG there are alot of things for this phone. She is out of the box 2.2 so maybe I am looking for the latest Android out as well. Basically I want her rooted, and on the latest Android version available for the phone.

Could someone experienced be so kind as to link me to the latest root method? I am not sure this thread..http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-...yo-install-clockworkmod-flash-custom-rom.html is up to date.
I'll keep reading until then. Once I do that I am sure I will be back since she will want to do something else to it. Thanks crew

If it helps. I use SBF files to return to stock, CWR to flash zips, and Root Explorer to run scripts. Thats the X terms.

The Fascinate has always been slightly different than the Captivate, so you will want to get into that forum to ask about the latest root method. Once you have root, download ROM Manager and install CM7 just like you probably did with your X.

From there, you should be able to even do MIUI if you want. But, sadly, I must direct you to the Fascinate forum as though my buddy does have one, it is done differently than the Cappy I think. Good luck

Whoops I mean Captivate, Mods can you please change that in the title for me?

If you just got this one, then we should not need to worry about apps and data backup? Hopefully? If so, then you can get root and then CM. Or whatever :).

You noted that you know Recovery mode. Are you familiar with Download mode? That is what we will need to do to first-

Go here-
[Stock ROMs](OneClicks Master Collection)+[Kernels (Stock & w/ CWM)]+[Modems] UPDATED - xda-developers

Find the KH3 build heading and grab the Odin one-click file for KH3 WITH bootloaders and WITH CWM injected kernel. Should be first link in KH3 section (link 1).

At the bottom on this page, post 1, is also the download for Odin 1.85. Get that too. Then go here-

CyanogenMod nightlies changelog for Captivatemtd

And grab the latest nightly for CM7, and copy it to the Captivate where you can find it again later.

That should be the files you will need. You will need a Windows computer to do this, and you will need to go into Download mode. That package I linked for you to download is actually a full ROM, stock Samsung 2.3.3 ROM with a CWM injected kernel... which is all we really want from it, but this is the easiest way to get it.

Expand the RAR file you downloaded and double-click the EXE. Should be staring at an app with one button, waiting for you to connect your phone.
- Pull the battery on your phone
- Connect the phone to your PC using a rear-side connected USB cable (use whatever on a laptop)
- While holding both VOLUP and VOLDWN (press the middle of the rocker down firmly and hold it there) connect the cable back to the phone.

You should see the yellow digger bot for Download mode show up, and a yellow box on the one-click app pop up indicating it can see your phone now. It may take a few seconds the first time you connect for Windows to ID the phone. Click START.

Try very hard not to mess up the cable or let the battery pop out. Safest if you set it down before hitting START. Should take 1-3 minutes.

When it is done, you actually will have a working 2.3.3 ROM. Don't bother booting into it however, if you just want to flash CM. So after loading the rom from Odin, and the phone reboots (or you have to pull the battery again), either way, shut the phone off. Now we go to Recovery to flash the CM7 zip you placed on the phone earlier... this should get familiar now.

Hold VOLUP and VOLDWN at the same time again, and while doing that, hold down power until you see the screen turn on, then let go of all the buttons. You should boot to Recovery... choose the CM7 zip and apply it. Phone should boot into CM7 in 5-10 minutes (first boot is long).

Let us know how it goes.

That is an excellent post, thank you loraque. I have all three files downloaded, the ROM(rar), the Recovery tool(Odin zip) and latest CM7 nightly(zip).

So the process is
1) I will open Odin(my X version of RSDLite) and use that to root and flash the stock ROM(I89UCKH3+wBL) which includes CWR? If so then yes I will be able to know how to flash the CM nightly thru CWR if decided upon later.

For right now I think we are just going to root and update to the 2.3.3(Odin and UCKH3)and leave CM7 off to the side for now. I will work on this this tonight and report back.

Actually, the Odin file is extra... keep that if you need it someday. The rar file will extract to an EXE which is Odin wrapped around a ROM and the extra buttons gone. They call it a one-click version. You do not need the Odin download for this process, but you may need it someday. Better to get it now.

1. None of this is actually rooting :). All root would do, is allow you to install ROM Manager, which you then need to flash CWM. We are bypassing that and just putting CWM on there. CM7 is already rooted, so once you flash it, you are set.

The ROM this one-click installs will work, but it is a stock ROM that Samsung never released... those typically have bugs. I recommend either doing CM right away, or choosing a custom ROM based on the leaks as they have most of the bugs dealt with.

If you do not do CM, I would install Pinnacle from here (Through CWM of course)-
[ROM][2.3.4][Gingerbread KH3]♦ Pinnacle 1.3 ♦ 09/24 - xda-developers

Grab the 1.2 file and flash it. After setting up the phone, reboot into Recovery and flash the non-wipe 1.3 update. Just my $.02.

Ohh OK. Well now that confuses me a bit lol. Which is the process to first root the phone? Once I root any device, then I know to get Rom Manager and flash CWR so later when its ROM time aka Cm7

Well ofc plans have changed and she wont have the device to me tonight, maybe tomorrow night now. So I can spend more rooting research time now.

No, you are not confused. In your example, the ONLY thing root access does is allow you to install ROM Manager. The first thing you then must do in ROM manager, is install CWM (if you are lucky. It is buggy as hell on SGS phones, or at least Samsung ROMs. Works fine once you are on CM). Then, once you have CWM, you install Cyanogen.

My way, I save you a step (who needs ROM Manager), The one-click you flash has CWM, boot into it and flash CM.

I would tell you how to root a 2.2 Captivate, but I do not know how. Word is that the fugu root method will do it, but when I looked at the instructions, they have you flashing with Odin anyway... why bother with that, when it is more steps than the above?

So long as you flash CM or Pinnacle (or any other custom ROM), you will have a rooted gingerbread ROM, which is what you want. Who cares if you actually 'root' it yourself? Let a developer have the hard part. :)

EDIT- Samsung or ATT, whomever, replaced the Recovery from 2.1 with a digitally signed Recovery in 2.2. So it requires the use of Odin to root, and if you require Odin, you may as well skip that crap and use Odin to get closer to where you want than JUST root.

OK so Odin is the key behind it all I think I am getting it now. Once I get a good nights sleep after all this reading, I will post one more time tomorrow to make sure I get it right so when she gets here tomorrow I will be ready to 1,2,3 get her a rooted device w CM7. Thanks for walking me thru this Loraque. Everything with my X is so easy but when its a new device I feel like a rookie for the beginning, lol

"- Pull the battery on your phone"
" Connect the phone to your PC using a rear-side connected USB cable (use whatever on a laptop)"
"While holding both VOLUP and VOLDWN (press the middle of the rocker down firmly and hold it there) connect the cable back to the phone."

You say pull the battery but later on in the post you say make sure the battery doesnt pop out(no mention of when the battery goes back in)
You say connect the phone to the pc but when holding both buttons you say connect the cable back to the phone(no mention when to unplug the phone)

Can you clarify?

Actually to make this easier, is it confirmed as of this late in release that a stock 2.2 Captivate can be rooted w Z4? Got the apk but I cant find a way to install non market apps on this device.
The One Click hasnt worked either, gives me an exception handling error on my Win7/x64 laptop w current drivers installed.
That Non Market install option is not under Application settings as I thought it would be and I am not adb-savvy.

If you call ATT, they will disable the sideloading block. You could also use the Sideload Wonder Machine from this website. I think it is up in the main forum area... might be easier than a call to ATT.

You should be careful flashing things however if you can't run Odin, as that is your safety net should things go wrong. For example, were you to ever want to return to stock or a Samsung ROM from CM7, you would HAVE to use Odin to do so. If you were to stay on CM or derivative ROMs (MIUI, Expresso, etc) then it would not be a problem unless things got messed up badly for some reason.

It works on my Win7/64 so there is something off somewhere. There are both 32 and 64 bit drivers, make sure you grabbed the right one. I would uninstall and try again though :).

"- While holding both VOLUP and VOLDWN (press the middle of the rocker down firmly and hold it there) connect the cable back to the phone."

My line here, where it says to connect the cable back... that should read "put the battery back in" since you already have the phone connected at that point.

You can unplug the phone when Odin indicates you are finished and the phone will start rebooting on its own. Stick the battery cover back on (if you haven't already) and disconnect. This is when you boot into Recovery and flash CM.

Sorry for my typos, it makes sense while I write it :).

The root methods, z4 and Superoneclick do not work since 2.2 stock. They worked great on 2.1 and were my root method back then.

Lastly, if your laptop has side USB ports and rear ports, make sure you are using a Rear side port. Not all laptops provide full power ports to the sides... though most seem to.
