I have no unread text messages yet my icon keeps showing that I do, how can I clear this?

I have no unread text messages yet my icon keeps showing that I do

I have no unread text messages yet my Text icon keeps showing a number 1 right above it saying that I have 1 unread message. I'm unable to clear it no matter what I do. Verizon said the only way to fix it is to reset the phone from scratch. I find that unacceptable.

Welcome to Android Central!

Try going to settings, applications, all apps, go to the messaging app and clear the cache. See if that helps.
