I have the S5; wife got the S4, same carrier, but different PRLs. Is this right? (RESOLVED)

About two weeks ago we got our new phones from the carrier. As stated, we have different PRL numbers; mine is in the 43000s and hers is in the 45000s. I notice also, though, that only the S5 has LTE connectivity, so is that the reason for the difference? If so, I would have expected the PRL on the later model to be higher.

I'd like to know about this definitely because I want to be sure I'm using the latest and best PRL available to me, especially as I'll soon be flashing a ROM.

If it's Verizon, dial *228 to update to the latest PRL for your phone. (I don't remember Sprint's number, maybe someone reading this does.)

*228 does not work on a LTE phone. You can try shutting the phone off and removing the sim card. Reinsert the sim card and restart the phone to have it establish a new connection.

If *228 doesn't work, does it follow that the option Settings=>System=>System Update=>PRL Update doesn't do anything? It doesn't error out when I run it, but it doesn't seem to do anything, either although it does say it has finished successfully.

I'll look into popping the SIM card though. To be honest, though, I'm a bit afraid to attempt that; rooting and flashing I'm down with, but messing with the HW not so much. Maybe after I google around a bit it won't seem so foreboding, though.

I called up my service provider today and got an answer. Regarding the question expressed in my thread title, yes, it's entirely normal that an S4 and S5 could have very different PRL version numbers, all else being equal. With regard to the PRL Version Update tool seeming to have no effect, that's only because the phone is already using the correct version number. When the version number needs to change, it will.

I'm glad that's over, because I did experience a moment of anxiety when the CSR asked me to run the system update check ("Update Now") and the error message I got back said the OS on my device had been modified in an unauthorized way--i.e. rooted stock KitKat. It's just as well, because now I've got everything configured the way I like and I'm not in any hurry to move to Lollipop.
