To rush, rooting seems intimidating and damgerous. But its really not, take the leap man. You wont regret it.
Back on topic. Use the 2.1 ruu, get it fixed, root, and flash a 2.2 rom or restore a nandroid. Nands are not compatible if you get a new phone, just keep that in mind.
Don't forget to tell the reps that you don't wanna upgrade.
