I've bought an adaptor and moved files from a pendrive to my Nexus. I'm hoping to view films via this too, then I remembered that I have both an external cd/dvd drive from an old laptop, and an external hard drive from my PC. My question is whether either of these would work via the micro USB adaptor?

depends some External hard drives have their own power supply. As for the CD/DVD I don't know that Android ahs any default "drivers" for those.

At best you'll be able to access a flash drive with an OTG cable and a $3 app. Most hard drives, no.

My Nexus 10 is rooted so I use "Stickmount" for external USB drives up to my 2 tb usb Seagate that has it's own power supply.

I have an external hard drive that will only connect when the Nexus 10 is above 90% battery. I ended up buying a USB Y Cable to provide power to the drive and it works fine in combination with the Nexus Importer app.
