I just bought a Google Nexus 7, And i don't know anything about it, Anyway i was trying to download the "My Xbox Live" app. And the "Xbox SmartGlass" app. then it said "You device isn't compatible with this version", So i started looking around and kept hearing about "Roots" and "Kernels".

Can someone tell me what a "Kernel" is and what a "Root" is?!!, and a way to get the "My Xbox Live" app. And the "Xbox SmartGlass" app. to work
And dose it void the warranty like a jailbreak dose?!!

By the way this is my first android device.

Kernel is the engine that makes all of the hardware (screen, insides, power button etc) to work with the software (android 4.1.2).

Root is special access that allows someone to modify every file on the device. Its akin to administrative privileges on a windows computer (you can do anything you want), or jail breaking. Yes it supposedly voids your warranty, but if you're careful you'll never have a problem.

In order to get the app to work.... well you can't. It wasn't built for your device (or isn't compatible with jellybean yet) so you'll have to wait. No hacking can really fix this.

Hope I answered your questions.

Btw, welcome to the forums and the world of android ;)

I went to Google and searched for Xbox glass apk. I downloaded it to the memory on the N7, no problem. Click it to install. Works fine with Jellybean, 100 pct of features work. This is called sideloading, does not need root or kernel access.

Why smartglass was not initially released for the N7 is beyond me, as it installs fine. I have not synced it with the Xbox though, but usually dumb things like a rear camera will often cause apps to be 'incompatible' even though it's not.

I was able to pull them off my phone and sideload but this being your first android device, you don't really have that luxury.

There are third party app stores but I personally don't trust them.

Link please? Ones I find don't have .apk's or even a .zip file

What is a "apk" and how do I install it

Apk is the Android OS file package, such as Windows is in exe format. You install it by either placing it on your N7 and clicking on the file to run it or you can run it directly from cloud, such as dropbox and it will install (if compatible).

Apk is like an .exe program file for Windows.

I would suggest you do as another poster stated and Google the apk for smart glass then "side load" it which is just connecting to your computer using the USB cable and dragging and dropping it onto your Nexus 7's Download folder (or any folder you choose on you Nexus) then click on it from you N7.

Or just download using the N7 through a web browser. Saves time.
