I just got a free LG Phoenix

I got a Phoenix for free from AT&T's promo and have a few questions about it.

How do I install the custom ROM? do i root it and CWM it or is there more to it?
Is it laggy once you install a custom ROM and overclock it and how's the battery life after?
Also, how to I unlock it to work with T-Mobile?
