i just rooted my phone... now what?

i rooted my phone and i want all that great stuff that everyone is talking about! i want complete customization of my thunderbolt. so far i have downlaoded a rom but i cant figure out exactly what its supposed to do. i uderstand that its a OS for my phone but still dont see any diefference.if anyone can let me know how to uninstall factory apps and get my battery to live longer please explain how or at least steer me in the right way. please dont let this decision to root my phone to be in vain.
